13 Suspects Arrested in 2-Day Anti-Illegal Fishing Operation in Surigao del Norte

Surigao del Norte, October 17, 2024 — In a concerted effort to curb illegal fishing, authorities in Surigao del Norte successfully apprehended 13 individuals in a two-day operation that spanned multiple municipalities. The operation was spearheaded by the Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Office (SDNPPO), in collaboration with local police forces and Bantay Dagat personnel.

The operation, part of the province’s intensified anti-illegal fishing campaign, took place in the waters of San Benito, San Isidro, Pilar, Socorro, Alegria, Sta. Monica, and Taganaan. According to PCOL Nilo T. Texon, Officer-in-Charge of the SDNPPO, the suspects were apprehended for violating various municipal and city ordinances that protect marine environments and regulate fishing practices.

The individuals were caught red-handed during patrols in marine protected areas, where they were found using prohibited fishing gear and techniques. The operation resulted in the confiscation of numerous illegal fishing paraphernalia, including:

  • One wooden canoe
  • Three motorboats, two with 16-horsepower double engines, and one with a 6-horsepower single engine
  • Four air compressor tanks and elongated hoses
  • Eleven spear guns
  • Various diving equipment, including swimming goggles, flippers, and flashlights
  • 20 meters of fine mesh net
  • 54 kilograms of assorted fish, estimated to have a market value of Php 10,050

Among the confiscated fish species were “Moymoy,” “Katambak,” “Katabutan,” “Bontog,” “Pananglitan,” and “Tilapia.”

PCOL Texon praised the collaborative efforts of the involved municipalities in the crackdown. He emphasized the need for continued vigilance to preserve marine resources, stating, “Our intensified efforts to combat illegal fishing reflect our dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that future generations, especially our fisherfolk in Surigao del Norte, will continue to benefit from our nation’s abundant marine resources.”

The 13 suspects, along with the confiscated items, are now under the custody of the local police stations for proper legal processing. Authorities have also indicated that sanctions will be handled through the respective treasurer’s offices.

This operation is part of the province’s ongoing commitment to protecting its marine biodiversity and enforcing the law against destructive fishing practices.
