CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, DOS, Maguindanao del Norte – Ambassador Suat Akgὓn, Chairman of the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB), along with his delegation, paid a significant visit to the headquarters of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division, Philippine Army, on September 23, 2024. This visit underscores the ongoing efforts towards peace and security in Mindanao, particularly focusing on the decommissioning of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) combatants.
Ambassador Akgὓn and his party were accorded military honors and warmly welcomed by Major General Antonio G. Nafarrete, Commander of the 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central (JTFC), along with key officials from the Command.
During the engagement, Ambassador Akgὓn emphasized the crucial role of the IDB in the peace process in Mindanao, particularly in overseeing the decommissioning of weapons from MILF combatants. He reiterated the IDB’s commitment to carrying out its mandate with the utmost impartiality, integrity, and confidentiality, ensuring that the process contributes meaningfully to the stability and development of the region.
The decommissioning of MILF combatants is a pivotal component of the peace agreement between the Philippine government and the MILF. This process involves the gradual disarmament of MILF fighters and their reintegration into civilian life, which is essential for lasting peace and development in Mindanao.
The visit marks a continued collaboration between the Philippine Army and international bodies in promoting peace and reconciliation in Mindanao. Major General Nafarrete reaffirmed the JTF Central’s support for the decommissioning efforts and its active role in sustaining peace and security in the Joint Operational Area.
“This highlights the ongoing efforts of the government forces to secure peace not only in Lanao del Norte but also across Region 10. PRO10, along with other agencies, remains committed to ensuring that former rebels receive the necessary support as they reintegrate into society, while we continue to strengthen our fight against terrorism,” said PBGEN Ricardo G. Layug, Jr., Regional Director of Police Regional Office 10 (PRO10).
The decommissioning process, facilitated by the IDB, is seen as a significant step towards achieving long-term peace and stability in Mindanao, fostering an environment conducive to economic growth and development.
