Parang, Maguindanao del Norte – April 5, 2025 — In a move to reinforce efforts for a fair and peaceful electoral process, Mr. Rikardo Marelic, Liaison Officer of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM), paid a courtesy visit to Police Regional Office – Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO BAR) Regional Director PBGEN Romeo J. Macapaz at Camp BGen Salipada K. Pendatun on Friday, April 5.

The meeting highlighted the growing collaboration between the European Union and Philippine authorities in preparation for the 2025 National and Local Elections, particularly in the Bangsamoro region. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to uphold democratic processes and ensure voter safety during the electoral period.

Mr. Marelic’s visit signals the vital role of independent election observation missions in strengthening transparency, building public trust, and deterring potential irregularities. His engagement with regional police leadership marks a step forward in aligning security measures with international standards for free and credible elections.

PBGEN Macapaz welcomed the initiative, assuring the EU EOM of the PNP’s readiness to support non-partisan, peaceful, and orderly polls. “The presence of international observers underscores the importance of impartial oversight in our electoral processes,” he said.

The European Union has long supported democratic development in the Philippines through its election monitoring programs. As one of the most conflict-sensitive areas in the country, the Bangsamoro region’s electoral integrity is crucial not only for the legitimacy of local governance but also for sustaining peace and inclusive political participation.

As the 2025 elections draw near, the visit reflects the shared vision of national and international stakeholders in safeguarding the will of the people, especially in regions with a complex history and evolving democratic institutions.
