Davao City is emerging as a national model for its progressive efforts in promoting male participation in family planning, particularly through its vasectomy program. With the City Health Office (CHO) at the forefront, the initiative has inspired other provinces and local government units (LGUs) across the Philippines to adopt similar approaches.

Loida Alemendares, Programs Director of the DKT Philippines Foundation, Inc., praised Davao City’s pioneering role in advancing gender-responsive family planning initiatives.

“I want to commend Davao City for being one of the pioneers in vasectomy and male involvement in family planning. You have excellent gender programming. Since 2007, Davao City has been a trailblazer in this area, and now, other LGUs are encouraged to adopt this model and join our campaign,” Alemendares said.

A Showcase of Good Practices

The city recently shared its innovative practices at the National Family Planning Conference, drawing nationwide attention to its success in integrating vasectomy into its family planning programs. Alemendares highlighted that through the CHO’s continued efforts, men are educated about the benefits and misconceptions surrounding no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV), the safest and most effective method of permanent birth control for men.

A Safe and Painless Procedure

Dr. Titus Theodor Antonio of the CHO’s Population Division underscored the safety and simplicity of NSV, describing it as a non-invasive procedure.

“It is very safe because it’s non-invasive. Unlike the conventional vasectomy that requires a blade, NSV uses just a small puncture. Pain is minimal—almost nonexistent,” Antonio explained.

Since January 2024, the program has provided NSV services to 80 Dabawenyos, 28 non-residents, and even two foreigners, reflecting its growing reach and popularity.

Free Services and Ongoing Campaigns

The CHO’s Population Division offers free NSV services every last Friday of the month, with special events like the No Scalpel Vasectomy Day on November 29. On this occasion, the CHO is set to provide the service to 22 clients at the Buhangin District Health Center.

Dabawenyos interested in availing of this free service can contact the Population Division at 09952024680 or visit their Facebook page.

Inspiring Change Nationwide

Davao City’s success story is more than just a local achievement—it’s a catalyst for change across the Philippines. By breaking stereotypes and encouraging male involvement in family planning, the city has not only strengthened its gender programs but has also paved the way for more inclusive and effective health services nationwide.

With its trailblazing efforts, Davao City continues to set an example, proving that empowering men to take part in family planning is a key step towards healthier families and communities.
