DAVAO CITY — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is stepping up its maritime security operations in Southeastern Mindanao with the deployment of BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV 9701), a move aimed at strengthening sea patrols, improving maritime surveillance, and preventing illegal activities within the region’s waters.

The Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) formally welcomed the vessel as part of its continuing efforts to reinforce the country’s maritime presence and protect vital sea routes and coastal communities within its area of responsibility (AOR).
The deployment was highlighted during a media briefing held on November 5, 2026, aboard BRP Teresa Magbanua at the Sta. Ana Anchorage Area in Davao City. The event underscored the Coast Guard’s intention to intensify maritime patrols and strengthen its capacity to monitor activities across the southeastern maritime corridor.
With the vessel’s arrival, the PCG aims to enhance maritime domain awareness, improve the monitoring of vessel movements, and increase its ability to detect and respond to suspicious, unauthorized, and potentially unlawful activities at sea.
The deployment also reinforces the Coast Guard’s broader mandate of enforcing maritime laws, protecting marine resources, conducting search and rescue operations, and safeguarding the country’s national maritime interests.
The arrival of BRP Teresa Magbanua was preceded by the November 4, 2026, reception of its commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Winjhay Love A. Tolentino, PCG, at the CGDSEM headquarters. Coast Guard personnel rendered arrival honors and ceremonial courtesies in recognition of the commanding officer’s arrival and in keeping with the institution’s traditions and professional values.
The assignment of the vessel to the district comes at a time when sustained maritime vigilance remains essential to protecting Philippine waters. Beyond the presence of patrol vessels, effective maritime security requires continuous surveillance, law enforcement capabilities, coordination among government agencies, and the active participation of communities whose livelihoods depend on the sea.
Recognizing the importance of community cooperation, CGDSEM is urging fishermen, vessel operators, and residents of coastal communities to remain alert and promptly report suspicious movements, unauthorized maritime activities, and other irregularities.
Reports may be brought to the nearest Coast Guard station or substation to help authorities assess potential threats and respond accordingly.
For fishing communities and other maritime stakeholders, stronger Coast Guard visibility is expected to provide additional support in maintaining safer waters, protecting marine resources, and discouraging activities that undermine maritime law and order.
However, the effectiveness of the deployment will ultimately depend on sustained patrol operations, timely information-sharing, and the Coast Guard’s ability to maintain a consistent presence across its extensive maritime area of responsibility.
Through the deployment of BRP Teresa Magbanua, CGDSEM is reaffirming its commitment to protecting Southeastern Mindanao’s maritime domain, upholding Philippine maritime laws and rights, and ensuring safer and more secure seas for Filipino communities and all legitimate users of the country’s waters.
