IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay, October 21, 2026 — Authorities seized 800 reams of suspected smuggled cigarettes valued at ₱916,800 during an inspection of a passenger bus along the National Highway in Barangay Taway, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, on Tuesday night, October 21.

Personnel of the Zamboanga del Norte Maritime Police Station (ZDN MARPSTA), in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the PCG K9 Unit in Zamboanga del Norte, and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Port Police in Dapitan, conducted the inspection at approximately 10:10 p.m., resulting in the discovery of the cigarette shipment.
The confiscated items consisted of 750 reams of BUSQO Menthol cigarettes and 50 reams of Thunder Menthol cigarettes, according to the initial report.
Investigators said an unidentified individual had loaded boxes onto the passenger bus, declaring that they contained assorted products. The shipment was reportedly intended for delivery to Dumaguete City, although authorities have yet to establish the identity of the person who arranged its transport.
The discovery has prompted authorities to document the seized cigarettes and conduct an inventory as part of the initial investigative and evidentiary procedures. The items were brought to the ZDN MARPSTA before their turnover to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for appropriate disposition.
Authorities cited a possible violation of Republic Act No. 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings on Tobacco Products Act, in connection with the confiscation. The law requires graphic health warnings on tobacco product packaging, although the specific regulatory violations involving the seized shipment have not been detailed in the initial report.
The seizure highlights the role of coordinated maritime and port-related law enforcement operations in monitoring the movement of potentially illicit goods through transportation networks. Passenger buses can also serve as channels for transporting commercial shipments, making inspections and coordination among enforcement agencies important in identifying suspicious cargo.
However, the circumstances surrounding the shipment, including its origin, ownership, and compliance with customs and tobacco regulations, remain subject to further investigation. No arrest or identification of a suspect was reported in the initial account.
The Bureau of Customs is expected to determine the appropriate action against the confiscated cigarettes in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
