TAWI-TAWI, Philippines — The Naval Command Western Mindanao (NCWM) has intercepted a vessel carrying a massive shipment of undocumented cigarettes and suspected smuggled diesel fuel off South Ubian, Tawi-Tawi, in what authorities described as a significant development in the continuing campaign against maritime smuggling and other illicit activities in Western Mindanao.

The interception was carried out on October 3 involving M/B DOLPHIN, during an operation led by naval forces under the NCWM, headed by Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo M. Reyes Jr. PN, Commander of the Naval Command Western Mindanao.

Authorities recovered 1,576 master cases of undocumented cigarettes from the vessel, along with 12 drums of suspected smuggled diesel fuel. The combined estimated value of the seized commodities was placed at approximately ₱243.19 million, underscoring the scale of the shipment intercepted in the waters off Tawi-Tawi.

The operation forms part of the NCWM’s sustained maritime security and law-enforcement efforts aimed at preventing the movement of contraband through the waters of Western Mindanao, an area where maritime routes are closely monitored because of their strategic importance to trade, security and the movement of people and goods.

The successful interception also highlights the role of coordinated maritime operations in detecting and disrupting the transportation of undocumented goods before they can reach their intended destinations.

Following the operation, the seized vessel and recovered commodities were turned over to the Bureau of Customs and other appropriate government agencies for proper disposition and the initiation of appropriate legal action.

The turnover places the seized shipment under the jurisdiction of the concerned civilian authorities for further investigation, documentation and proceedings in accordance with existing customs and other applicable laws.

RADM Reyes commended the personnel of Naval Task Force 61, its operating units and partner government agencies for their vigilance and coordinated efforts that led to the interception.

The NCWM said the operation demonstrates the importance of sustained cooperation among maritime security and law-enforcement agencies in addressing smuggling and other illicit activities at sea.

The interception of the M/B DOLPHIN comes as naval authorities continue to strengthen maritime surveillance and enforcement operations across Western Mindanao, particularly in waters that can be exploited for the movement of contraband.

With more than ₱243 million worth of undocumented and suspected smuggled commodities removed from circulation in a single operation, the seizure represents a major blow to the illicit maritime trade targeted by authorities and reinforces the government’s continuing efforts to secure Western Mindanao’s maritime domain.
