PANGUTARAN, Sulu — September 9, 2026 — The Municipality of Pangutaran formally celebrated a major milestone in its continuing pursuit of peace and stability on Wednesday, September 9, following its declarations as a Gun-Free, Rido-Free and Peace-Centered Community, alongside its recognition as having achieved a Status of Stable Internal Peace and Security (SIPS).
The milestone was commemorated through a formal ceremony led by the Local Government Unit of Pangutaran, with the full support of the 1103rd Infantry (Kalis) Brigade, 11th Infantry (Alakdan) Division, Philippine Army, through the 100th Infantry (Kalasag) Battalion, in coordination with partner security agencies, national government institutions and other stakeholders.
The ceremony was attended by Major General Leonardo I. Peña PA, Commander of the 11th Infantry (Alakdan) Division, and Sulu Vice Governor Abdusakur M. Tan, together with municipal mayors and local government officials from the First and Second Districts of Sulu.
Representatives from the security sector, national government agencies, traditional and religious leaders, community stakeholders and other partners also took part in the event, underscoring the broad cooperation behind Pangutaran’s peace and security gains.
The formal declaration of the municipality’s new status was conducted on August 25, 2026. Wednesday’s ceremony served as a public recognition of those accomplishments and of the continuing efforts of local leaders, security forces and communities to build a more stable and peaceful environment.
Gun-Free Community
Pangutaran’s declaration as a Gun-Free Community reflects the municipality’s efforts to prevent the proliferation and misuse of firearms and strengthen a culture of responsible citizenship.
The achievement also highlights the importance of cooperation between local authorities, security forces, community leaders and residents in addressing threats associated with the presence and misuse of firearms.
