MAGUINDANAO DEL SUR, Philippines — A woman was wounded after armed men allegedly opened fire on the vehicle she was riding in during an incident involving individuals reportedly linked to two Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) groups in Shariff Saydona Mustapha, Maguindanao del Sur, adding to concerns over continuing gun-related violence in the Bangsamoro region despite the implementation of a gun ban.
The victim was identified by Bangsamoro police spokesperson Capt. Steffi Salanguit as Naila Datunor, an adult resident of Barangay Libutan, Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur.
Police said Datunor was reportedly the wife of Commander alias “Malibuteng” of the MILF 128th Base Command.
The shooting occurred at around 7:00 to 7:45 p.m. in Sitio Pulutan, Barangay Linantangan, Shariff Saydona Mustapha, as Datunor was traveling toward Barangay Libutan aboard a green Mazda Vanette drop-side vehicle, described as a van modified into a pickup-type vehicle.
According to the initial police account, unidentified armed men fired at the vehicle using firearms whose type has yet to be determined.
Datunor sustained gunshot wounds to different parts of her body and was immediately rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. Reports indicated that her condition was serious, although authorities continued to verify the extent of her injuries.
Police are looking into the possibility that the shooting stemmed from a rido, or clan-based conflict, or a family dispute, although no definitive motive has been established.
Authorities have also identified individuals reportedly affiliated with the MILF 118th Base Command, allegedly under Battalion Commander Kagi Adam Gani, as possible persons involved in the attack.
The allegation, however, remains subject to investigation, and police have yet to establish the identities and individual roles of those responsible for the shooting.
The Shariff Saydona Mustapha Municipal Police Station has coordinated with military authorities for security during crime scene processing and documentation. Police are also coordinating with the victim’s family and local barangay officials to establish a clearer account of the incident and identify those responsible.
Nearby police stations and Armed Forces of the Philippines units have likewise been alerted for possible dragnet and checkpoint operations as authorities work to locate the suspects.
Violence Persists Despite Gun Ban
The incident comes amid continuing reports of shootings and other gun-related incidents in parts of the Bangsamoro region, raising questions about the effectiveness of firearms restrictions when armed groups and individuals continue to have access to weapons.
The implementation of a gun ban is intended to restrict the carrying and use of firearms during a designated period, particularly in areas where authorities seek to prevent election-related violence, retaliatory attacks and other armed confrontations.

The latest shooting also underscores the potential danger to civilians who become caught in conflicts involving armed groups. Datunor was reportedly traveling in a vehicle when it was fired upon, and the circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
Authorities Probe Possible Rido
Police have not ruled out the possibility that the shooting is connected to a rido or a personal or family dispute.
Rido-related violence has historically been a major security concern in parts of Mindanao, with disputes between families or clans sometimes escalating into armed confrontations and retaliatory attacks.
Such conflicts can persist even after an initial confrontation, particularly when the parties involved have access to firearms and armed supporters.
Authorities are therefore expected to determine whether the shooting was an isolated attack or part of a larger dispute involving the two MILF-linked groups mentioned in the initial report.
The investigation will also have to establish whether the alleged involvement of members of the 118th Base Command is supported by evidence and whether the incident was connected to any existing conflict involving the victim’s family.
For now, police are treating the reported involvement of the group as an allegation pending the completion of the investigation.

The coordination between police and military units is intended to prevent further violence and facilitate the identification and apprehension of those responsible.
Crime scene investigators are expected to document the area, examine the vehicle and recover available physical evidence that could help establish how the attack was carried out.
