DATU ODIN SINSUAT, Maguindanao del Norte — A man identified only by the alias “Toks,” reportedly a payong-payong driver, was shot on Friday afternoon, August 21, in Sitio Talisay, Barangay Bugawas, making it the third shooting incident recorded in separate areas of Datu Odin Sinsuat within a span of just 24 hours.

The latest shooting adds to growing concern over gun-related violence in the municipality, particularly as authorities continue to implement the firearms ban in the Bangsamoro region.
Based on initial information, the victim was riding a payong-payong—a locally used motorcycle-based public transport vehicle—when the shooting occurred. He sustained a gunshot wound and was immediately rushed to a medical facility by first responders for treatment.
Authorities have yet to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack, including the exact identity of the victim beyond the alias provided in initial reports.
The identity of the gunman also remains unknown. The Datu Odin Sinsuat Municipal Police Station is continuing its investigation to determine who was responsible for the shooting and establish the motive behind the attack.
Police have not yet disclosed whether the latest incident was a targeted attack, a robbery-related shooting, a personal dispute, or connected to any other criminal activity. These circumstances remain subject to investigation.
Third Shooting in 24 Hours
The incident in Barangay Bugawas is reportedly the third shooting recorded in Datu Odin Sinsuat within only 24 hours, with the previous incidents occurring in separate areas of the municipality.
The clustering of three shooting incidents within such a short period has raised questions about the security situation in the municipality and whether the cases are isolated incidents or may have some connection.
Authorities have yet to establish any link among the three shootings.
Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances, locations, possible witnesses, and other available evidence in each case to determine whether there are similarities that could indicate a common suspect, motive, or pattern.
At this stage, however, there is no official confirmation that the three incidents are connected.
Shooting Occurs Amid Ongoing Gun Ban
The latest incident also highlights the continuing challenge faced by authorities in enforcing the ongoing gun ban in the Bangsamoro region.
The restriction on the carrying and use of firearms is intended to help prevent armed violence and maintain peace and order, particularly during a period when heightened security measures are being implemented.
Despite these measures, the occurrence of another shooting underscores the difficulty of preventing firearms-related incidents, particularly when the identities of gunmen and the sources of the weapons involved remain unknown.
Authorities have not yet determined what firearm was used in the Barangay Bugawas shooting or whether the weapon was legally or illegally possessed.
Police are expected to pursue these aspects as part of the investigation, including efforts to identify the shooter and determine how the firearm was obtained.
Police Continue Investigation
The Datu Odin Sinsuat police are continuing to gather information regarding the latest shooting. Investigators are expected to interview witnesses and examine circumstances surrounding the attack as they work to identify the perpetrator.
The victim’s condition has not been fully disclosed in the initial information available, although he was reported to have been brought to a hospital for medical attention.
Authorities have likewise yet to release a detailed account of what immediately preceded the shooting.
As the investigation develops, police will also determine whether the latest case has any connection to the two other shooting incidents reported elsewhere in Datu Odin Sinsuat within the same 24-hour period.
For now, authorities are treating the incidents as separate cases unless evidence establishes otherwise.
The latest shooting serves as another reminder of the continuing security challenges confronting communities in Datu Odin Sinsuat, where authorities are being pressed to identify those responsible for gun violence and ensure that restrictions on firearms are effectively enforced.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the identity of the suspect, motive, firearm used, and any possible connection to the other shooting incidents have yet to be established.
