LOPEZ JAENA, Misamis Occidental — Authorities recovered an estimated ₱160,000 worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes after an allegedly abandoned pickup truck was found carrying boxes of contraband in Barangay Eastern Poblacion, Lopez Jaena, Misamis Occidental, on Monday afternoon, August 10, 2026.
The seizure took place at around 5:57 p.m. in Purok 1, following an intelligence report received by the Lopez Jaena Municipal Police Station (MPS) through the Provincial Intelligence Unit of the Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office.
According to the report, a white Ford Ranger was allegedly transporting smuggled cigarettes and was heading toward a mechanic shop for repairs. Acting on the information, police personnel from Lopez Jaena MPS immediately proceeded to the area, with support from the 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company, to verify the reported movement of the vehicle.
When authorities arrived, however, the pickup truck had already been left unattended.
Police then conducted an inspection of the vehicle. Inside its rear compartment, officers discovered several boxes containing New Berlin cigarettes, believed to have been illegally transported.
Authorities reported recovering a total of 200 reams of cigarettes, with an estimated market value of ₱160,000.
The discovery adds to continuing law enforcement efforts in Misamis Occidental to intercept the movement of untaxed and potentially illegally imported tobacco products, which are commonly transported through various routes in Northern Mindanao.
Following the seizure, the recovered cigarettes were brought under the custody of the Lopez Jaena MPS for proper documentation, inventory and disposition. Authorities said the confiscated items are being prepared for turnover to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Ozamiz City, which is expected to undertake the appropriate procedures regarding the seized tobacco products.
Owner, smugglers being traced
Despite recovering the suspected contraband, authorities have yet to identify the owner of the Ford Ranger or the individuals responsible for transporting the cigarettes.
Investigators are now working to establish how the vehicle reached the area, where it came from, where the cigarettes were supposed to be delivered and who abandoned the pickup after apparently learning that authorities were checking the reported shipment.
The circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s abandonment are also being investigated as police attempt to determine whether the driver and other persons involved managed to escape before law enforcement personnel arrived.
Authorities are expected to examine available evidence and information that could help identify those behind the shipment and determine whether the cigarettes were brought into the area without the required tax payments and documentation.
The Lopez Jaena MPS and the Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office continue to coordinate in the investigation as efforts are underway to identify and possibly hold accountable those responsible for the suspected smuggling operation.
The seizure demonstrates the importance of intelligence-driven operations in disrupting the movement of illicit tobacco products, particularly when shipments are moved using ordinary vehicles and concealed from immediate detection.
For now, the 200 reams of New Berlin cigarettes remain in police custody pending the completion of documentation and their planned turnover to the BIR for appropriate disposition.
