IMELDA, Zamboanga Sibugay — A barangay councilor was shot dead by unidentified riding-in-tandem assailants along the national highway in Purok Santan, Barangay San Jose, Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay on Monday morning, May 25, 2026.

The victim was identified as Edison Magdamit, an incumbent barangay councilor of Barangay Gandiangan, Imelda town.
Initial police investigation revealed that the incident occurred at around 9:20 a.m. while the victim was driving his motorcycle through Barangay San Jose. Witnesses said Magdamit was being followed by two armed men riding a Honda Click 125 motorcycle.
Upon reaching a portion of the national highway, the suspects allegedly opened fire multiple times using a suspected caliber .45 pistol, hitting the victim several times.
Magdamit sustained multiple gunshot wounds that caused his instantaneous death at the scene.
After the attack, the suspects immediately fled toward an unknown direction and remain unidentified as of this writing.
Authorities have launched a hot pursuit operation to track down and arrest the perpetrators. Police investigators are also looking into the possible motive behind the killing, including whether the incident was related to the victim’s work as a public official or personal matters.
Police have yet to release additional details regarding the identities of the suspects and the motive for the crime as investigators continue gathering witness statements and reviewing possible CCTV footage from nearby establishments.
The investigation remains ongoing pending further information from local authorities and the Imelda Municipal Police Station.
