BAYANG, Lanao del Sur — In a region once deeply marked by armed conflict and distrust, a simple gesture of dialogue and cooperation is steadily becoming a symbol of hope for lasting peace in the Bangsamoro homeland.

On May 20, the 64th Infantry “Knights” Battalion of the Philippine Army carried out a coordination and goodwill visit to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) 101st Base Command Community at Tactical Base Camp Darul Hannan in Barangay Padas, Pagayawan, Lanao del Sur — a move seen as another significant step in strengthening the government’s peacebuilding efforts in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
The visit was led by Lieutenant Colonel Jerry B. Gaviola, commander of the 64IB, together with key battalion officers. They were warmly welcomed by Engr. Salman R. Maraki, commander of the MILF 101st Base Command, alongside Mr. Maclary P. Macadatu of the MILF Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH).
Far from being a routine military engagement, the gathering reflected the continuing transformation of relationships between former adversaries who now share a common goal — preserving peace and ensuring development in conflict-affected communities.
Military officials said the activity served as a venue to strengthen coordination, improve communication, and reinforce partnerships between government security forces and MILF leaders. Discussions focused on maintaining peaceful relations, addressing security concerns, and sustaining collaborative peace initiatives across the area of operation.
For decades, communities in Lanao del Sur and other parts of Mindanao suffered from recurring violence brought about by armed encounters, clan feuds, and instability. But with the implementation of the peace process between the Philippine government and the MILF, efforts have increasingly shifted toward reconciliation, community cooperation, and inclusive governance.
Both parties during the dialogue expressed their commitment to protect the gains of the peace process and continue fostering unity among residents in BARMM.
LTC Gaviola emphasized that open communication and strong collaboration among stakeholders remain essential in maintaining peace and order, particularly in vulnerable and previously conflict-affected communities.
He also recognized the critical role played by peace partners, local stakeholders, and community leaders in advancing sustainable peace and development throughout the region.
Observers note that these continuing engagements between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and MILF communities represent a major milestone in the normalization process under the Bangsamoro peace agreement. What once were frontlines of conflict are now becoming spaces for dialogue, cooperation, and shared aspirations for stability.
Residents and local leaders in the area have also expressed optimism that sustained coordination between security forces and MILF leadership will help prevent violence, strengthen public trust, and create safer communities for future generations.
The goodwill visit stands as another reminder that peace in Mindanao is no longer anchored solely on signed agreements, but on continuous engagement, mutual respect, and collective efforts on the ground.
As the Bangsamoro region continues its journey toward healing and development, initiatives like these underscore the shared commitment of the Philippine Army and MILF peace stakeholders to build a secure, progressive, and united future for the people of Mindanao.
