JOLO, Sulu — Authorities are investigating the killing of a man and a woman whose bodies were discovered early morning in a remote area of Barangay Katian, Indanan, Sulu, with initial findings pointing to a possible illicit relationship and illegal drug involvement.

The victims were found around 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday and later transported by personnel of the Indanan Municipal Police Station to Kandang Mau’ag in Barangay Bus-Bus, Jolo. The discovery was first reported by a local caretaker, Munib Buddih, who said the bodies were initially spotted around 9:00 a.m. in a secluded portion of the village.
Police identified the victims as a male, believed to be between 30 to 40 years old, and a female, estimated to be in her 30s. The man was clad in a black shirt and blue shorts, while the woman wore a black shirt and jogging pants. Authorities noted the woman had tattoos on her arms and shoulder-length hair.
According to the initial investigation led by Indanan police chief PLtCol. Francis Briones, the crime scene bore signs of a shooting incident. Responding officers recovered several empty shells believed to be from a 5.56mm firearm or M16 rifle. The female victim sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, while the male victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The area where the bodies were found is described as isolated and far from residential communities, raising questions about how the victims ended up in the location.
Investigators revealed that the female victim was reportedly a deportee who had married a local resident. Authorities are currently exploring the possibility that the killings were motivated by an illicit affair, as both victims were said to have existing partners.
Another angle being pursued is a potential link to illegal drugs. Police said drug paraphernalia and suspected shabu were recovered at the scene, suggesting the victims may have been involved in illegal drug activities.
The male victim has since been identified and claimed by his family from Barangay Takut-Takut, Jolo. Meanwhile, the female victim remained unclaimed as of this writing and was temporarily laid to rest at the Kandang Mau’ag cemetery.
Further investigation revealed that the male victim had reportedly been planning to travel to Pangutaran before the incident, while the woman was believed to have remained in the area after failing to accompany him.
Authorities also disclosed that the woman’s husband, who is reportedly based in Malaysia, is being considered as a possible person of interest, although no formal charges have been filed.
Police continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses as they work to establish the identities of the perpetrators and the exact motive behind the killings.
