DAVAO CITY — Eight members of a demolition team hired to enforce a court-issued writ of possession were arrested after they were allegedly caught stealing personal belongings from houses scheduled for demolition in a compound in Barangay 74-A, Matina Crossing on Friday morning, March 6.

According to the Talomo Police Station 3, the demolition operation began at around 7:30 a.m. in the Arroyo Compound, particularly the Lastima Compound, as authorities carried out the court order to clear the area.

However, at around 11:00 a.m., police officers monitoring the demolition reportedly caught eight demolition workers allegedly taking personal items from the houses that were being dismantled.

Authorities said the suspects were seen placing copper wires, jackets, and clothing inside their bags, prompting the police to immediately intervene and arrest them.

The demolition operation was being closely supervised by the police to ensure the lawful and orderly enforcement of the writ of possession, which authorizes the rightful owner to take control of the property.

Police Major Genesis Oriel, station commander of the Talomo Police Station 3, reminded all demolition workers and personnel involved in the operation to respect the residents and strictly follow the law.

“We are here to ensure that the implementation of the demolition is conducted in a fair, orderly, and lawful manner. Our presence is to maintain impartiality and prevent any untoward incidents,” Oriel said.

He also issued a stern warning against anyone attempting to take advantage of the situation.

“I strongly warn everyone involved not to take advantage of the situation or take items that do not belong to them. Anyone found violating the law will be dealt with accordingly,” he added.

Police authorities are now preparing appropriate charges, likely including theft, against the eight arrested demolition team members.

Meanwhile, the demolition activity in the area continued under the supervision of authorities to maintain peace and order and ensure that the operation proceeds without further violations.
