DIPOLOG CITY — Ten individuals voluntarily surrendered their loose firearms to the Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Norte in a move authorities described as a significant step toward strengthening peace and security efforts in the province.

The turnover ceremony took place at the Provincial Capitol in Dipolog City under the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Management Program, a government initiative aimed at reducing the proliferation of unregistered and illegally held firearms in communities.

Provincial officials, along with representatives from the military and police, witnessed the activity, highlighting the continuing collaboration between local government units and security forces to maintain stability across the province.

Among those present during the ceremony were Brigadier General Samuel G. Yunque, commander of the 102nd Infantry Brigade; Lieutenant Colonel Jessie G. Bergonia, commanding officer of the 97th Infantry Battalion; and Police Lieutenant Colonel Eleno A. Dondoyano, representing Police Colonel Reydante E. Ariza of the Zamboanga del Norte Police Provincial Office.

Officials expressed appreciation to the individuals who chose to surrender their firearms voluntarily, noting that such actions contribute to ongoing peace-building initiatives and efforts to prevent violence and armed conflict in communities.

Authorities also emphasized that the SALW Management Program plays a vital role in addressing loose firearms, which have long been identified as a factor in criminal incidents and security concerns in various parts of the country. Through the program, firearm holders are encouraged to turn over unregistered weapons and support government-led peace and order campaigns.

Local leaders thanked the military and police for their continued support and partnership in implementing peace and security programs in the province. They also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation among communities, law enforcement, and local government units.

Officials said the voluntary surrender of firearms reflects growing public trust and willingness among residents to support initiatives aimed at building safer communities.

Authorities added that the provincial government will continue to promote peace-centered programs and encourage more residents to participate in efforts that help ensure a more secure and peaceful environment across Zamboanga del Norte.
