NORALA, South Cotabato — A New Year’s celebration turned tragic after a firecracker exploded in the face of a man at a private resort in Norala town, leaving him with severe facial injuries on Thursday afternoon, January 1, 2026.

The incident happened around 4:20 p.m. at a private swimming resort in Barangay Poblacion, identified by authorities as Nocil Resort. The victim, identified only by the alias “Sam,” an adult resident of the same barangay, was reportedly celebrating with family members when the accident occurred.

Based on initial police reports, one of the victim’s companions lit a kwitis (a type of firecracker). Moments later, the firecracker allegedly veered off course, flew toward the victim, and detonated directly in his face. The blast caused extensive injuries, with reports indicating that the right side of the victim’s face was badly damaged.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Norala District Hospital, where he received emergency medical treatment. Hospital authorities said he is now in stable condition but remains under close medical observation and is scheduled to undergo surgery due to the severity of his injuries.

Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. They also renewed their warning to the public against the use of firecrackers, stressing that such accidents are preventable and continue to pose serious risks, especially during holiday celebrations.

Police and local officials reiterated their appeal for safer alternatives to welcome the New Year, urging residents to prioritize safety to avoid similar incidents in the future.
