Malaybalay City, December 14, 2025 – The City Forest Firefighters under the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) of Malaybalay City successfully responded to three forest and grassland fire incidents yesterday, December 12, 2025, from the afternoon to early evening.

The fires occurred in Incalbog, Can-ayan; Dinlayan Area, Tigbawan, Can-ayan; and the Water District Area in Kalasungay. Reports indicate that approximately 1.5 hectares of grassland were destroyed, along with three pine trees and five bamboo plants in Tigbawan, Can-ayan.

The City ENRO is currently investigating the cause of the fires, which are suspected to be man-made, likely from open burning intended to prepare lands for corn cultivation. Officials warned that such practices are extremely dangerous, as uncontrolled fires can devastate the city’s forests, particularly areas with mature pine trees, causing irreversible damage to both the environment and the community.

The City ENRO extended its salute to the brave forest firefighters who risked their lives to control the fires and prevent further destruction.

Authorities also reminded the public to exercise responsibility and caution when managing lands. Open burning, while sometimes used in farming preparation, can easily escalate into uncontrollable wildfires that threaten lives, property, and the city’s natural resources. Citizens are urged to report fire hazards immediately and to adopt safer, sustainable land management practices.

“Let us protect our forests, which are the lungs of our city, and support our firefighters by being responsible,” the City ENRO emphasized.
