Koronadal City has gained national recognition for its innovative approach to waste management during the recently concluded Inter-Regional Forum on Sustainable Waste Management held on September 17–19, 2025, in General Santos City.

The forum was organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)–Foreign Assisted and Special Projects Services (FASPS), in collaboration with the DENR Central Office under the leadership of Undersecretary Jonas R. Leones and Assistant Secretary Jacqueline Caancan.

The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), supported by the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), spearheaded Koronadal’s initiatives that earned recognition in the field of Best Available Technology and Best Environmental Practices in Open Burning Activities. These efforts are aligned with the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

Through this global partnership, the city successfully enhanced its materials recovery facility system and implemented innovative programs such as producing marketable products from 100% recycled plastics and glass bottles. This achievement not only reduced waste but also demonstrated Koronadal’s commitment to environmental sustainability, innovation, and collaboration with both local and international agencies in protecting the environment.
