CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, Maguindanao del Norte – April 25, 2025 — In support of the government’s peace efforts, six (6) members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), including a sub-leader, voluntarily surrendered to the 2nd Mechanized Infantry (Makasag) Battalion after years of armed struggle, exhaustion, and hunger.

The surrender took place during the conduct of the Presentation of Former Violent Extremists (FVEs) held on April 24, 2025, at the Headquarters of the 1st Mechanized Infantry “Maaasahan” Brigade, Camp Leono, Brgy. Kalandagan, Tacurong City.

Facilitated through sustained collaboration between the military, local government units, and peace partners, the event highlighted the unified efforts in encouraging rebels to reintegrate into society. The FVEs were formally presented to Col. Ronel R. Manalo, Acting Brigade Commander of the 1st Mechanized Brigade, and Sultan Kudarat Vice Governor Raden C. Sakaluran.

According to Lt. Col. Felmax B. Lodriguito Jr., Commanding Officer of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion, the relentless military operations and the lack of clear direction in the rebels’ armed movement led them to choose the path of peace.

The group turned over six high-powered firearms and war materiel, including one (1) M1 Garand rifle, one (1) M203 grenade launcher, one (1) M79 grenade launcher, one (1) rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), one (1) homemade sniper rifle, and one (1) homemade Ingram submachine gun with magazine.

For operational security, the identities of the surrenderers are withheld. However, their decision to return to the fold of the law is seen as a manifestation of growing trust in the government’s peace efforts and the commitment of the security sector to end local armed conflict.

Maj. Gen. Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and Joint Task Force Central, stated:

“Their surrender is proof that terrorist groups are rapidly losing support in the region. We continue to encourage remaining members to lay down their arms and embrace a new beginning for their families and communities.”

The former rebels will undergo a reintegration process and receive government assistance to help them rebuild their lives in peace.

The 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion, under the leadership of Lt. Col. Lodriguito, remains steadfast in its mission to promote peace, security, and development in Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao del Sur.

It is never too late to return to the fold of the law. Embracing peace is embracing a brighter future—for oneself, for one’s family, and for the nation. The path of violence leads nowhere; in peace, there is hope.
