ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY, Philippines — Police authorities seized 1,000 reams of suspected smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately ₱1.146 million during a law enforcement operation in Olutanga, Zamboanga Sibugay, on September 30, 2026.

The operation was conducted by personnel of the 5th Special Operations Unit (5th SOU) of the PNP Maritime Group, in coordination with the Zamboanga Sibugay Maritime Police Station, 1st Police Mobile Force Company, and Olutanga Municipal Police Station.

Police operatives carried out the operation in Purok 4, Pulo Mabao, Olutanga, where they apprehended one individual and recovered 20 master cases containing approximately 1,000 reams of cigarettes suspected to have been smuggled into the area.

Authorities placed the estimated value of the seized cigarettes at ₱1,146,000. The confiscated tobacco products reportedly had no required graphic health warnings, prompting authorities to cite possible violations of Republic Act No. 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings on Tobacco Products Act.

The absence of the required health warnings is significant because tobacco products covered by the law are required to carry graphic health warnings designed to inform consumers of the health risks associated with tobacco use.

Following the operation, the arrested individual and the seized cigarettes were brought to the Mabuhay Special Boat Crew–5th SOU for documentation, inventory and proper disposition.

Authorities said the case will be referred to the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) and the Department of Trade and Industry Region IX Consumer Protection Division for appropriate action and further assessment of the seized tobacco products.

The operation underscores continuing law enforcement efforts in coastal communities and island municipalities in Zamboanga Sibugay, where maritime police units play a key role in monitoring the movement of suspected smuggled goods.

The seized cigarettes will remain subject to the appropriate government procedures as authorities determine the applicable violations and the next legal steps against the arrested individual.
