SHARIFF AGUAK, Maguindanao del Sur — Several residents of Sitio Mungkas in Barangay Kuta, Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur, temporarily evacuated Tuesday afternoon after reports of heightened tension involving two armed groups raised fears of a possible confrontation in the area.
Residents reportedly packed their belongings and moved toward safer areas after sensing what they described as an increasing security threat. Some evacuees also said they heard gunfire while they were leaving the area, although the circumstances surrounding the reported shots have yet to be independently established.
One of the affected residents, identified only as Fatima, said they decided to leave because of the tension and their fear of being caught in the middle of a possible armed confrontation.
The evacuees appealed to authorities to immediately de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of civilians who may be caught in any violence.
“Kami na namang mga sibilyan ang laging talunan,” one evacuee said, expressing frustration over the recurring impact of armed tensions on ordinary residents.
Vice Mayor Denies Reports of Gunbattle
Amid the reports circulating on social media and among local residents, Shariff Aguak Vice Mayor Datu Oping Ampatuan denied that a gunbattle had taken place in the municipality.
Ampatuan specifically disputed reports referring to an alleged clash in Barangay Malingao, including areas identified in circulating reports as Sitio Mungkas and Sitio Kuta.
The vice mayor urged the public, including those posting information online, to verify reports before sharing them, stressing the potential consequences of spreading unverified information during a tense security situation.
His statement has added uncertainty to the developing incident, as reports of residents leaving the area emerged at the same time that local officials were disputing claims of an actual armed encounter.
Police Still Verifying What Happened
The Shariff Aguak police are still determining what actually happened in the reported area and whether an armed confrontation occurred.
Authorities have yet to publicly establish the identities of the groups allegedly involved, the cause of the reported tension, or whether the reported gunfire was connected to any confrontation.
There were also no confirmed reports available at the time of writing of casualties, property damage, or arrests arising from the incident.
The situation underscores the need for caution in reporting developments in conflict-affected communities, particularly where unverified information can trigger further fear or displacement among civilians.
For now, the evacuation of some residents remains the clearest indication of the level of anxiety in the affected community, even as local authorities work to verify the circumstances behind the reported tension.
The Mungkas area has previously figured in security-related incidents in central Mindanao. Historical military and police reports have documented armed encounters in and around the wider Shariff Aguak–Malingao area, illustrating the security sensitivities of communities in the region.
Authorities are expected to provide further clarification once verification of the situation on the ground is completed.
