IMPASUGONG, Bukidnon — A 33-year-old woman was safely rescued by police officers after an apparent suicide attempt at the Atugan Bridge along the Sayre Highway in Barangay Capitan Bayong, Impasugong, Bukidnon, on Sunday afternoon, August 2.
According to the Impasugong Municipal Police Station (MPS), the incident occurred at approximately 1:09 p.m. while members of the Revitalized Police Sa Barangay (RPSB) Impasugong Cluster were conducting traffic control operations in the area due to the passage of heavy vehicles.
Police said the incident was first brought to their attention by a concerned citizen who noticed the woman standing in a dangerous position on the bridge and appearing to be in distress. The citizen immediately alerted the officers, prompting them to respond without delay.
Upon reaching the scene, the responding personnel were able to safely approach the woman, calm her, and prevent her from carrying out the act. Authorities credited the quick coordination between the vigilant resident and the police responders for preventing what could have been a tragic incident.
During an initial conversation with responders, the woman reportedly disclosed that she had been struggling with personal and family-related problems, which had led her to contemplate ending her life.
Rather than treating the situation solely as a law enforcement matter, the responding officers immediately provided emotional support and crisis intervention to help de-escalate the situation. After ensuring her safety, she was brought to the Impasugong Municipal Police Station for documentation before being referred to the appropriate agencies for further psychosocial intervention, counseling, and other necessary support services.
Police said the woman will continue to receive appropriate assistance while authorities conduct standard documentation and follow-up procedures related to the incident.
The Bukidnon Police Provincial Office (BukPPO) also commended both the responding officers and the concerned citizen whose timely report made the rescue possible.
Provincial Director PCOL Oliver Sotto Navales praised the alertness, compassion, and professionalism demonstrated by the responders, emphasizing that community cooperation remains vital in preventing tragedies and ensuring public safety.
He also encouraged the public to remain observant and immediately inform authorities whenever they encounter individuals who may be in emotional distress or other dangerous situations, stressing that early intervention can save lives.
