BALOI, Lanao del Norte — Police authorities intercepted an estimated ₱276,000 worth of alleged smuggled cigarettes after an abandoned vehicle was recovered during a checkpoint operation in Baloi, Lanao del Norte, on the evening of **July 24, 2026.
The operation was carried out by the Police Regional Office-10 (PRO-10) through the Baloi Municipal Police Station (MPS) in coordination with the Regional Intelligence Unit-10 (RIU-10) as part of intensified efforts to curb the movement of illicit goods in Northern Mindanao.
According to PRO-10, police personnel were manning a checkpoint along the Diversion Road in Purok 2, Barangay Nangka, Baloi, at around 8:40 p.m. when they received information about a vehicle allegedly transporting smuggled cigarettes.
While monitoring the area, officers spotted a red sedan that abruptly made a U-turn before reaching the checkpoint, raising suspicion among the operating personnel. The vehicle was immediately pursued by law enforcement officers.
The chase ended when authorities discovered the vehicle abandoned. A subsequent inspection led to the recovery of 345 reams of alleged smuggled San Marino cigarettes with an estimated market value of ₱276,000, along with the sedan and its ignition key.
Police noted that smugglers often attempt to exploit adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, to evade law enforcement while transporting contraband. In this case, however, the strategically established checkpoint disrupted the operation, forcing the suspects to abandon both the vehicle and its illegal cargo before they could escape.
Authorities did not immediately identify the individuals behind the shipment, and an investigation is underway to determine the ownership of the vehicle and track down those responsible for the attempted transport of the contraband.
The confiscated cigarettes and the recovered vehicle were brought to the Baloi Municipal Police Station for proper documentation before being turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for appropriate disposition and further legal proceedings.
Police Regional Office-10 Regional Director PBGen. Christopher N. Abrahano lauded the operating personnel for their prompt action and reiterated the police force’s commitment to sustaining anti-smuggling operations across the region.
“Smugglers may take advantage of adverse weather conditions, but PRO-10 remains vigilant at all times. This successful operation reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting our communities and supporting the government’s campaign against smuggling,” Abrahano said.
The seizure forms part of the Philippine National Police’s continuing crackdown on the illegal cigarette trade, which deprives the government of billions of pesos in tax revenues and fuels organized criminal activities. Authorities have intensified intelligence-driven operations and checkpoint inspections across Northern Mindanao to disrupt smuggling routes and prevent the distribution of untaxed tobacco products.
Officials urged the public to report suspicious transport activities and reaffirmed that coordinated law enforcement operations with partner agencies, including the Bureau of Customs, will continue to strengthen efforts against smuggling syndicates operating in the region.
