ISABELA CITY, Basilan — A routine school day at Basilan National High School turned into a frightening incident after a pregnant teacher was accidentally injured while trying to stop a fistfight between two Grade 10 students inside a classroom on Wednesday, July 15.

According to the school’s initial investigation, the confrontation began as a heated verbal argument between the two students before escalating into a physical altercation. As the situation intensified, the teacher immediately stepped in to restore order and prevent the violence from worsening. During the intervention, she was unintentionally struck by a punch apparently intended for one of the students.

The unexpected incident sent shockwaves through the school community, particularly because the teacher is pregnant, prompting immediate concerns for both her safety and that of her unborn child.

The teacher, whose identity is being withheld for privacy, was rushed to the nearest hospital where she underwent medical evaluation and observation. After receiving the necessary examinations, doctors confirmed that both she and her unborn baby were out of immediate danger. She was later discharged and is now recuperating at home while her condition continues to be closely monitored.

Officer-in-Charge School Principal Dr. Arnel Balang Hajan clarified that he was not present on campus when the incident occurred, as he is currently confined in a hospital after being diagnosed with dengue fever. Before his hospitalization, he had designated a temporary Officer-in-Charge to oversee the school’s daily operations during his absence.

School officials emphasized that the safety and welfare of both students and personnel remain their highest priority, adding that appropriate measures are being taken to address the incident.

Following the altercation, the two Grade 10 students involved were immediately escorted to the school’s Guidance Office, where they will undergo a formal investigation and be subjected to appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the school’s code of conduct and existing policies.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the dispute that triggered the fight. School administrators are currently gathering statements from witnesses and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident to establish a complete account of what transpired.

The administration of Basilan National High School has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe, orderly, and peaceful learning environment, stressing that incidents of violence inside the campus will be dealt with in accordance with established school regulations while ensuring the welfare of everyone involved.

The incident has also renewed discussions on the importance of conflict resolution among students and the need for strengthened campus safety measures to protect both learners and educators from similar incidents in the future.
