Bansalan, Davao del Sur – Authorities are intensifying their investigation after the headless, decomposing body of an unidentified person was discovered along the banks of a creek in Purok 5, Barangay Buenavista, Bansalan, Davao del Sur, on the morning of July 7.

According to the Bansalan Municipal Police Station, the remains were already in an advanced state of decomposition when they were found, making immediate identification difficult.
The grim discovery was made by a local resident who was walking toward a neighboring barangay when he noticed a strong foul odor in the area. Curious about its source, he followed the smell until he found the decomposing body lying beside the creek.
Police said the victim’s head was missing, further complicating efforts to establish the person’s identity and determine the exact cause of death. Because of the body’s condition, investigators have yet to conclusively determine whether the victim is male or female, although initial reports described the remains as those of a man.
Authorities said a full autopsy and forensic examination cannot be properly conducted until the victim’s identity has been established. Investigators are also working to determine whether the decapitation occurred before or after death and whether the killing was connected to another criminal incident.
The remains were turned over to E.B. Brillantes Funeral Homes for proper handling and further forensic processing while police continue gathering evidence.
Police Major Fidelito Viola Jr., Officer-in-Charge of the Bansalan Municipal Police Station, appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the victim. He urged anyone with information, or families with relatives who have recently gone missing and may match the description, to immediately coordinate with the Bansalan Municipal Police Station.
Authorities believe public cooperation could be crucial in establishing the victim’s identity, notifying the next of kin, and advancing the investigation.
The discovery has raised concerns among residents, particularly after investigators noted that the victim’s body had been decapitated, prompting suspicion that the death may have been the result of a deliberate killing. However, police emphasized that all circumstances surrounding the case remain under investigation, and no conclusions have been made pending the results of forensic examinations and the identification of the victim.
The Bansalan Municipal Police Station continues to gather evidence and interview possible witnesses as investigators work to determine the victim’s identity, establish the cause of death, and identify those responsible for the killing.
