DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur — A heartbreaking tragedy struck a residential community in Barangay Tres de Mayo on Sunday, June 21, after a mother was arrested for allegedly killing her own one-month-old son inside their home.

The victim, identified by authorities as Baby Cedrix, was declared dead after allegedly being strangled and physically assaulted by his mother, identified only as Jocelyn, an adult resident of Purok Adelfa, Barangay Tres de Mayo.

According to the initial investigation conducted by the Digos City Police Station, the incident occurred at around 11:45 a.m. Neighbors became alarmed after hearing the infant crying loudly and continuously from inside the house.

Concerned residents reportedly checked on the situation and were shocked to witness the suspect allegedly strangling the baby. Witnesses immediately attempted to intervene and rescue the child, but the mother allegedly resisted their efforts.

Police said several neighbors rushed to help, but the infant could no longer be saved. Witness accounts indicated that the suspect allegedly continued to assault the child, reportedly throwing and striking the infant, resulting in fatal injuries.

Investigators are looking into reports that the incident may have been preceded by a heated argument between the suspect and her live-in partner. Information gathered by authorities suggested that the dispute stemmed from a personal disagreement, after which the suspect allegedly lost control of her emotions.

Police Chief Master Sergeant Hernan Blantucas, investigator of the Digos City Police Station, said authorities are also examining the suspect’s mental condition as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to police, the woman is believed to have been suffering from depression or another possible mental health condition. Authorities are also exploring whether she may have experienced a postpartum-related mental health disorder following childbirth. However, officials emphasized that no medical diagnosis has yet been confirmed and that further psychiatric evaluation is necessary.

The suspect is currently under police custody while investigators complete the filing of a parricide case against her through inquest proceedings.

Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to establish all circumstances surrounding the tragic death of the infant.

The incident has left residents of the community in shock and mourning, with many expressing grief over the loss of a child whose life ended barely a month after birth.

Police continue to gather statements from witnesses and await the results of further medical and psychological assessments as part of the case.
