A potentially tragic afternoon at a popular beach resort in Hagonoy turned into a story of courage and bayanihan after concerned residents and brave young rescuers saved a drowning minor from the strong waves off Leling Beach on Saturday afternoon, May 16, 2026.

The incident happened at around 2 p.m. at Leling Beach, where a young male identified as PJ Vale nearly lost his life after being swept into the deeper part of the sea amid strong winds and powerful waves battering the coastline.

According to reports gathered by local media, a child first spotted the victim already struggling and submerged in the water. Alarmed residents and beachgoers immediately rushed to respond. Concerned citizens quickly pulled the victim from the sea and transported him back to shore using a small boat.

Rescuers immediately administered first aid and emergency medical attention before the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Authorities confirmed that the minor is now in stable condition and continues to recover while undergoing laboratory examinations after reportedly ingesting seawater during the incident.

In an interview with local radio, Kirby Suico said the victim and several other youths were reportedly playing with skim boards along the shoreline when the strong current and violent waves suddenly dragged one of them toward the deeper section of the sea.

The barangay official emphasized that the area was experiencing unusually rough sea conditions due to strong winds at the time of the incident.

Suico also issued a strong reminder to beachgoers and tourists visiting resorts in Barangay Leling to exercise extreme caution, especially during unfavorable weather conditions.

He particularly discouraged the improper use of inflatable floaters or improvised life-saving devices, warning that such equipment may drift uncontrollably into deeper waters because they lack steering or stability.

The successful rescue operation drew praise from the community, especially after the Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Leling publicly commended the young rescuers who risked their own safety to save the drowning victim.

In a statement, the youth council hailed the bravery, compassion, and unity displayed by the rescuers, describing their actions as a shining example of heroism among today’s youth.

“In a moment of danger and uncertainty, you chose to help without hesitation, proving that courage is not measured by age, but by the willingness to stand up and save a life,” the SK statement read.

The organization added that the rescuers’ quick response and teamwork gave the victim “another chance at life” and inspired the entire community by demonstrating that the youth are “not only the hope of the future, but heroes of today.”

Residents and local officials also expressed gratitude to everyone who took part in the emergency response, saying the incident highlighted the enduring spirit of bayanihan and the importance of vigilance in coastal communities, especially during dangerous sea conditions.
