LAKE SEBU, South Cotabato — A fire broke out early Friday morning, April 17, damaging portions of the well-known Punta Isla Lake Resort, one of the Philippines’ most popular tourist destinations.

According to initial reports, the blaze started at around 4:00 a.m., disrupting the quiet atmosphere of the lakeside resort. The fire affected several key areas, including the convention hall, kitchen, receiving section, front desk, and the resort’s T’boli Hall. A souvenir shop was also damaged before firefighters were able to bring the situation under control.

Local authorities said the fire spread quickly through parts of the facility, prompting an immediate response from the Bureau of Fire Protection units in Lake Sebu and nearby Surallah.

Mayor Floro “Ken” Fungan confirmed that the fire erupted in the early hours of the morning and is suspected to have been caused by faulty electrical wiring, although this has yet to be officially confirmed pending investigation.

Despite the extent of the damage, no injuries or casualties were reported. Resort staff acted swiftly to ensure the safety of guests, preventing what could have escalated into a more serious incident.

However, the fire also destroyed personal property belonging to guests, including two motorcycles—an XRM and a Yamaha NMax—parked within the resort premises.

Authorities are still assessing the total cost of damage as investigations continue.

In a statement, Val Solivio-Li, CEO of Solid View Hospitality Group, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of public support and commended resort employees for prioritizing guest safety during the emergency.

“We will bloom like the lotus, once again,” Solivio-Li said, signaling optimism for the resort’s recovery.

Known for its panoramic views of Lake Sebu and its iconic floating restaurant, Punta Isla Lake Resort serves as a major hub for tourists exploring the area’s natural attractions and the rich cultural heritage of the T’boli people.

The incident raises concerns over fire safety in tourist establishments, as authorities continue their probe into the exact cause of the blaze.
