CAMP ALAGAR, Cagayan de Oro City — Police officers successfully prevented a young man from taking his own life after he attempted to jump from a bridge in Atugan Bridge on the evening of March 5, 2026.

According to authorities, personnel from the Bukidnon Provincial Mobile Force Company were on duty at the bridge around 7:30 p.m. when they noticed a young man exhibiting unusual behavior and appearing distressed while standing along the structure.
The police team, led by Dave E. Mahilum, Force Commander of the unit, immediately monitored the situation. The officers on the ground, Jovanie F. Barcena and Jade M. Cardines, approached the individual to assess the situation and ensure his safety.
However, as the officers attempted to engage him, the young man suddenly tried to leap from the bridge.
Reacting swiftly, the two policemen rushed toward him and managed to grab hold of his clothing, preventing him from falling into the river below. Their quick response and coordination successfully averted what could have been a tragic incident.
The rescued individual was immediately secured and later brought to the Impasug-ong Municipal Police Station for proper care, assessment, and coordination with concerned authorities to determine the appropriate intervention and support.
Police authorities said the incident highlights the importance of vigilance and rapid response among law enforcement personnel assigned to public safety duties.
Officials have not yet released further details about the identity of the individual, but they emphasized that the priority is ensuring his well-being and providing necessary assistance following the traumatic incident.
Authorities also encouraged the public to remain attentive to individuals who may be experiencing emotional distress and to immediately seek help from authorities or mental health professionals when needed.
