BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi — Several loose firearms were formally turned over to authorities on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, as part of a strengthened campaign against the proliferation of illegal weapons in the province’s first district.

The ceremonial turnover was conducted by the Philippine Marine Corps’ 4th Marine Rifle Battalion at its Rear Command Post in Barangay Nalil, Bongao, marking a significant milestone in the implementation of the government’s Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Program in the area.

Military officials said the activity highlighted the continuing efforts of security forces and local stakeholders to encourage residents to voluntarily surrender unregistered and illegally held firearms, which authorities believe contribute to violence and security concerns in some communities.

The successful initiative was made possible through close coordination between the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) of Tawi-Tawi, the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) and Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Simunul, as well as key partner agencies including the Ministry of Social Services and Development (MSSD) and the Municipal Police Operations Section (MPOS).

Marine officials also acknowledged the crucial role played by Marine reservists and community stakeholders, who acted as intermediaries and advocates in encouraging individuals to surrender their firearms voluntarily and support peacebuilding efforts in the province.

Members of the United States Marine Special Operations Command (MSOC) Philippines, currently deployed in Tawi-Tawi, were also present during the activity to support the initiative and observe the ongoing security cooperation efforts in the area.

Authorities described the turnover as more than just a simple surrender of weapons, noting that it represents a broader commitment to strengthening Internal Security Operations and Territorial Defense Operations in the southernmost province.

Military leaders emphasized that the collective action of the armed forces, local government units, partner agencies, and community leaders demonstrates the growing unity in addressing security concerns and promoting stability across Tawi-Tawi.

Officials expressed hope that the continued collaboration among security forces and local communities will further reduce the presence of loose firearms and contribute to sustaining peace and security in the province.
