A passenger boat carrying crew members and their relatives sank while traveling between islands in Basilan waters, prompting a rapid rescue operation that saved all 15 people onboard.

Authorities said the incident occurred near Baluk-Baluk Island as the vessel was en route from Isabela City to Pilas Island. Initial information indicated that the passenger boat encountered trouble at sea and eventually sank before reaching its destination.
Despite the sudden maritime emergency, responders and local officials quickly mobilized, preventing what could have escalated into a deadly incident. All passengers — composed of seven crew members and eight relatives accompanying them — were successfully rescued during the coordinated response.
Local officials confirmed that the survivors were immediately brought to safety at Baluk-Baluk Island, where they were attended to by health workers and community responders. As of the latest update, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.
The rescue operation involved coordinated efforts from local government units, maritime authorities, and community volunteers. Among those recognized for their immediate action were Arsina Kahing-Nanoh, personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard substation, Baluk-Baluk Island Barangay Chairman Sandra S. Alip, members of Bantay Dagat, as well as local health staff and Barangay Health Workers who provided immediate medical assistance.
Officials said the incident once again underscores the importance of preparedness, strong coordination, and rapid response in maritime communities where sea travel is a daily necessity.
Authorities are expected to conduct further assessment to determine the cause of the sinking and to ensure that safety protocols for passenger boats operating in the area are strictly observed.
