Surigao del Norte — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has recovered a floating cadaver in the waters between Barangay Pacifico, San Isidro, and Barangay Magpupungko, Pilar, Surigao del Norte on Friday morning, January 3, 2026—a grim development in the days-long search following a kayaking tragedy off the coast of Burgos town in Siargao Island.

According to the PCG, the retrieval is directly linked to the kayak capsizing incident reported on December 30, 2025 near Pasikon Beach, Barangay Baybay, Burgos, Surigao del Norte. Since the incident, Coast Guard personnel from CGS Siargao have been conducting sustained search and rescue operations across surrounding waters, despite challenging sea conditions.

The discovery was made after a local fisherfolk spotted a floating body and immediately alerted authorities. Acting swiftly, the PCG deployed a search and retrieval team. At around 8:25 a.m., the remains were successfully brought ashore and later positively identified by the victim’s family. The body was subsequently turned over to Gades Funeral Homes for proper disposition and necessary arrangements.

The recovery brings closure to the tragic incident that unfolded when a recreational kayaking trip turned fatal. On December 30, a kayak carrying three individuals—Mr. Eisen Ezecquiel B. Carpio, Mr. Eliseo G. Carpio Jr., and 19-year-old Mr. Eisner Seimone B. Carpio—capsized after being caught in strong sea currents and heavy waves near a rocky cliff area at around 12:15 p.m. Two of the victims were rescued, while the youngest, Eisner Seimone Carpio, a resident of Malolos, Bulacan, was reported missing.

In the days that followed, the PCG issued a Notice to All Mariners and appealed to the maritime community for assistance, underscoring the importance of vigilance and coordination during emergency situations at sea. Authorities have also reiterated warnings to tourists and water sports enthusiasts to strictly observe safety protocols, especially during unfavorable weather and sea conditions.

The PCG expressed gratitude to the local fisherfolk and community members whose vigilance and cooperation played a crucial role in the recovery, while reaffirming its commitment to maritime safety and rapid response in times of crisis.

May you find strength, comfort, and peace in the support of your community and in the cherished memories you shared with your loved one.
