By any measure, Dr. Cyrus Abeto Asis has already lived a life of service. A respected internist and cardiologist, a department chair, a founder of professional medical organizations, and a longtime consultant in Tagum Medical City—his decades have been devoted to healing hearts and strengthening communities. Yet at an age when many consider slowing down, he chose to begin again.

At 69, Dr. Asis did not just dream of becoming a lawyer—he became one.
In September 2025, after taking the Bar Examinations for the second time, Atty. Cyrus Asis finally earned the title he had long worked for. The venue was Ateneo de Davao University–Senior High School in Bangkal, Davao City, where he sat for the grueling exams in both 2024 and 2025. The first attempt did not go as planned. But instead of giving up, he returned—steadier, stronger, more determined.
“It’s not too late,” he often says. “Pursue your dream for as long as you have the determination.”
Those words are not a slogan. They are his life story.
A Life of Excellence in Medicine
Long before he became “Attorney,” Cyrus Asis was already “Doctor” in every sense of the word. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1980, graduating 16th out of 103—an early sign of the discipline and excellence that would define his career.
He trained in Internal Medicine and later completed his Cardiology fellowship at the Philippine General Hospital, one of the country’s premier training grounds. Over the years, he became a pillar in Mindanao’s medical community—serving as Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Davao Regional Medical Center, founding the Mindanao Internist Association in Tagum City, and helping establish the Southeastern Mindanao Chapter of the Philippine College of Physicians.
Today, he continues to serve as a consultant at Tagum Medical City, devoting himself to cardiac care and community health.
By all accounts, he had already “made it.”
But for Dr. Asis, learning never ends.
A New Dream, A New Battle
The decision to enter law school came not from restlessness, but from a deeper desire to serve. In a world where medicine and law often intersect—medico-legal cases, patient rights, health policies—he saw the value of understanding both fields.
So he enrolled at St. Thomas More School of Law and Business.
Balancing hospital duties, study time, and family life was no small feat. Law school is demanding even for full-time students in their 20s. For a senior doctor with decades of responsibilities, it was a test of endurance, discipline, and humility.
He completed his Juris Doctor degree in 2024.
Then came the Bar.
Some medico-legal professionals say medical school may be harder than law school—but the Bar Examination is tougher than the medical board. Dr. Asis now speaks from experience. He faced the heartbreak of an unsuccessful first attempt, something that could have easily ended the journey.
But he refused to let one result define him.
In 2025, he tried again.
And this time, he passed.
“He Did It Again”
When the results came out, the celebration was not just for a new lawyer—but for a living testament to perseverance.
“He did it again,” colleagues proudly shared. Now officially Atty. Cyrus Asis, MD, FPCP Φ1976, he stands among the rare few who hold two of the most esteemed professions in the country. Doctor. Lawyer. Healer of bodies and defender of rights.
Yet those who know him say the titles have never changed him. He remains the same soft-spoken mentor, the same committed physician, the same leader who builds institutions and uplifts others.
A Message to Every Dreamer
In a society that often tells people they are “too old,” “too late,” or “past their prime,” Atty. Cyrus Asis is living proof that purpose does not expire.
At 69, he chose courage over comfort. Growth over rest. Faith over fear.
His journey is not just about passing the Bar. It is about refusing to let age limit ambition. About honoring the call to serve in every way possible. About showing younger generations that success is not a race—and that setbacks are not the end.
From hospital corridors to courtrooms, from stethoscope to statute books, his life now bridges two worlds for the greater good.
And perhaps the most powerful lesson of all is this:
It is never too late to become who you are meant to be.
Three cheers to Atty. Cyrus Abeto Asis, MD—doctor, lawyer, leader, and living inspiration.
