CAMIGUIN / CAMARINES NORTE — A wave of grief and outrage has swept across Camiguin Province following the brutal killing of Annie Liz Agocoy, 38, whose lifeless body was discovered stuffed inside a plastic storage box and dumped under a bridge in Basud, Camarines Norte.

The remains of Agocoy, a native of Barangay Bura, Catarman, Camiguin, are expected to arrive today at Laguindingan Airport, Misamis Oriental, before being transported to her hometown in Camiguin for wake and burial. Her family has already prepared their home to receive her body and to lay her to rest in her final journey.

Horrific Discovery Under the Bridge

According to the Camarines Norte Police Provincial Office, the victim was found around 4:30 a.m. on January 2, 2026, floating beneath Pinagwarasan Bridge in Barangay Pinagwarasan, Basud. Residents were alarmed after seeing a black plastic storage box in the river and later discovered a woman’s body inside. Witnesses reported seeing a man allegedly throwing the container from the bridge.

The Basud Municipal Police Station, led by PCapt. Mark C. Armea, immediately launched an intensive investigation. With the help of media reports and social media circulation, authorities were able to identify both the victim and the suspect.

Agocoy was also known online as “Annie Yocuga” and was previously residing in Cabuyao, Laguna, where she reportedly lived with her partner.

Suspect Identified, Surrenders to Police

Police confirmed that the prime suspect is Arnel, 35, the victim’s live-in partner, who has since surrendered to authorities.

In his initial statement, the suspect claimed that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident and that a heated argument fueled by jealousy led to the tragedy. He admitted pushing Agocoy during the confrontation, causing her to fall and hit her head, rendering her unconscious.

Instead of seeking medical help, the suspect confessed that he panicked, feared the consequences, and decided to conceal the crime. He allegedly placed Agocoy’s body inside a plastic storage box, transported it by bus from Calamba, Laguna, and later hired a tricycle in Basud to bring him near the bridge where he dumped the container into the river.

Crucial Leads from Witnesses

Investigators revealed that the suspect was seen boarding a bus at Calamba Turbina carrying the storage box, which he claimed contained welding tools. The bus conductor and a tricycle driver later provided crucial descriptions that helped police create a facial sketch of the suspect, which was released on January 5, 2026.

The tricycle driver told police that the man asked to be dropped near the bridge, saying someone would fetch him, and warned that the box contained “fragile items and groceries.”

Family Awaits Justice

The identification of Agocoy was confirmed by a close friend who saw news reports online and by her cousin, who formally verified her identity. The Basud PNP coordinated with the Catarman Municipal Police Station to inform the grieving family in Camiguin.

As her remains return home, her family and community are demanding full justice for the brutal killing that ended her life in such a cruel and inhumane manner.

Police: Justice Will Be Served

The Camarines Norte Police Provincial Office, under PCOL Paul F. Abay, assured the public that the case is being handled with utmost seriousness and that all legal steps will be taken to ensure accountability.

Authorities also reminded the public to be responsible in using social media and to avoid spreading unverified information that may cause confusion or distress, urging everyone to rely on official police statements.

A Community in Mourning

The killing of Annie Liz Agocoy has sparked outrage both in Camiguin and across social media, with netizens condemning the violence and calling for harsher penalties against perpetrators of domestic abuse.

As her body makes its final journey back to the island she called home, her loved ones and an entire community mourn not only the loss of a daughter and sister—but the tragic, senseless way her life was taken.

Justice is now the cry of a family left shattered by brutality.
