KAPATAGAN, Lanao del Norte — Police authorities intercepted and seized an estimated 30 tons of suspected coal minerals during a late-night checkpoint operation in Barangay Bansarvil-1, Kapatagan on January 5, 2026, dealing a significant blow to the illegal transport of mineral resources in the province.

Personnel of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC), Lanao del Norte, flagged down a white Aluminum Wing Van truck (plate number CAF 9051) at around 10:50 p.m. for traffic violations at Purok 1. The vehicle was driven by a 29-year-old married man from Pling, Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay, with a 17-year-old male passenger from Crossing Bawang, Poblacion, Buug.

The driver was apprehended for failure to wear a seat belt and for driving without a valid driver’s license with the appropriate restriction code—both violations under Republic Act No. 4136. The offense is impoundable, prompting LTO-deputized personnel to issue a Motor Vehicle Impounding Receipt (MVIR).

During the inspection, police discovered the truck was heavily loaded with sacks of what appeared to be coal minerals. The documents presented by the driver to justify the transport were deemed questionable, triggering immediate coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for verification. A barangay official was also called in to witness the inspection.

Subsequent verification confirmed the presence of approximately 30 tons of suspected coal, with an estimated market value of ₱400,000.

Authorities temporarily detained the driver, the minor passenger, and the vehicle for documentation and proper disposition. The seized cargo and the suspects are set to be turned over to the DENR for appropriate action, including possible charges related to illegal transport and violation of environmental laws.

PCOL Leo De Leon Sua, Acting Provincial Director of the Lanao del Norte Police Provincial Office, lauded the operating team for their vigilance. “This operation underscores our commitment to enforcing the law and protecting our natural resources,” he said, commending the personnel for their dedication.

The incident highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement and environmental agencies to crack down on illegal mining and the unlawful movement of mineral resources across the province.
