ZAMBOANGA CITY — In a decisive crackdown ahead of the New Year celebration, police authorities arrested a 47-year-old suspect involved in the illegal online sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices during an entrapment operation Wednesday afternoon at Nuñez Extension, Camino Nuevo.

The suspect, identified as Larry Nebres Jr., a resident of the area, was taken into custody after operatives seized an estimated ₱500,000 worth of assorted firecrackers and pyrotechnics from his possession.

The operation was carried out by personnel of the City Investigation and Detective Management Unit (CIDMU) led by PMaj. Chester Natividad, in coordination with ZCPS11, the Regional Civil Security Unit 9, and City Licensing Officer Benjie Barredo.

Initial investigation showed that Nebres had been operating the online sale without the necessary special business permit, in violation of Republic Act 7183, also known as the Act Regulating the Sale, Manufacture, Distribution and Use of Firecrackers and Other Pyrotechnic Devices.

Authorities also confiscated five pieces of ₱100 bills used as marked money in the operation and two bundles of fake ₱1,000 bills amounting to ₱200,000, raising further suspicion about the suspect’s financial dealings.

All seized items have been turned over to the Zamboanga City Police Office under CIDMU custody for proper documentation and disposition.

City Administrator Percival Ramos reminded the public to strictly adhere to Ordinance 632, which restricts the use, sale, distribution, and storage of firecrackers and pyrotechnics within the city, in line with RA 7183.

“The arrest of this illegal firecracker and pyrotechnic seller should serve as a stern warning to others who are currently engaged or planning to engage in similar unlawful activities as the New Year approaches,” Ramos said.

Local officials and law enforcement reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety during the holiday season, emphasizing that illegal firecrackers not only violate the law but also pose serious risks to life and property.
