PANGANTUCAN, BUKIDNON — A police response to a disturbance call turned violent after a drunken man armed with a blade attacked a responding officer, prompting police to shoot the suspect in what authorities describe as self-defense on Tuesday night, November 25, 2025, in Purok 2, Barangay Adtuyon.
The suspect, identified only as alias Tino, 56, reportedly went on a drunken rampage and began threatening residents, prompting the village Chief Tanod to call for police assistance. Responding officers encountered the suspect hiding among thick vegetation near his home, brandishing an espading.
According to PCpt. Sheila Joy Jangad, spokesperson of the Bukidnon Police Provincial Office, the police repeatedly ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. Instead, he advanced toward the officers, forcing one of them — identified only as alias Ronnie — to step back. The officer stumbled, allowing the suspect to strike and slash him.
Despite continuous warnings, the suspect persisted in his attack, leaving the officers no choice but to neutralize the threat, Jangad said. One of the officers fired at the suspect to protect his colleague who was already wounded.
Both the injured police officer and the suspect were rushed to the Pangantucan Medical Hospital. The suspect was later transferred to a provincial hospital but was declared dead at around 3:20 a.m. on November 26.
Police confirmed that the responding officer sustained injuries from the hacking incident and is currently under medical care.
Authorities stressed that the use of force was a defensive measure to prevent further harm, especially after the suspect ignored warnings and continued his aggression.
The incident remains under investigation following standard protocol in police operations involving the use of firearms.
