MATANAO, DAVAO DEL SUR — Police authorities in Matanao arrested a former member of the New People’s Army (NPA) for violating Republic Act 9516, or the Illegal Possession of Explosives Act, during a saturation drive late Friday night, October 11, 2025.
The suspect, identified only as alias “Ka Jerome,” 28, a farmer and resident of Sitio Tagaytay, Barangay Savoy, Matanao, was once affiliated with Guerilla Front 74 of the NPA. He was caught after police officers noticed his suspicious behavior inside the TOYPI Videoke House at Crossing Casiawa, Barangay Poblacion.
According to the Matanao Municipal Police Station (MPS), the operation was led by PCPT Junrey L. Torres, Officer-in-Charge, together with PCpl Glengever Lavisto and Pat Clark Unabia. When approached, the suspect attempted to flee but was quickly subdued by responding personnel.
Upon inspection, police found a suspected grenade inside the suspect’s partially opened bag, prompting them to halt the body search and immediately coordinate with the Provincial Explosives and Canine Unit (PECU) for the safe handling and disposal of the explosive device.
“Ka Jerome” is now under the custody of the Matanao MPS, which has prepared the filing of charges for violation of R.A. 9516.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to maintain peace and security in the municipality and urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperative in reporting any suspicious individuals or activities.
The arrest highlights continuing police efforts to ensure that remnants of insurgent groups no longer pose a threat to communities in Davao del Sur.
