TALIPAO, SULU — A long-standing family conflict that has strained relationships in the municipality of Talipao has finally come to an end following the signing of a Covenant of Understanding on Wednesday, October 30, 2025.

The peace accord, facilitated by the Office of the Governor of Sulu led by Governor Abdusakur A. Tan II, was held at the Capitol Site in Barangay Bangkal, Patikul, and brought together representatives of the warring clans — the Limpasan Family of Upper Talipao and the Gardan and Amang Families of Tiis on one side, and the Bagio Family of Marsada and Proper Talipao on the other.

The agreement marks a significant step toward reconciliation and unity, signaling the end of years of hostilities that have disrupted peace and harmony in the area. The covenant embodies a spirit of mutual forgiveness and a shared commitment to permanently put an end to their long-running feud.

Present during the signing were Maj. Gen. Leonardo I. Peña, Commander of the 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division and Joint Task Force Orion; Governor Abdusakur A. Tan II; Vice Mayor Nivocadnezar Tulawie of Talipao; Barangay Captain Almudzmir Tan of Poblacion, Maimbung; Col. Abdelhalim H. Sakilan, Deputy Brigade Commander of the 1103rd Infantry Brigade; PCol. Jeff Briones Uy, Provincial Director of the Sulu Police Provincial Office; Lt. Col. Genesis R. Gabrido, Commanding Officer of the 41st Infantry Battalion; and other local leaders and stakeholders.

In his message, Maj. Gen. Peña lauded the reconciliation effort, underscoring the importance of grassroots peace in maintaining stability and fostering progress in Sulu. He reaffirmed the continued commitment of the Alakdan Division to work hand in hand with local government units, security forces, and community leaders to sustain peace and prevent the recurrence of clan-related conflicts.

The ceremony concluded with a solemn prayer for unity, understanding, and enduring peace — a symbolic gesture that underscored the community’s collective resolve to move forward together in harmony.

The successful mediation stands as a testament to Sulu’s ongoing efforts toward inclusive peacebuilding and the strengthening of family and community ties across the province.
