Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte — A total of 184 residents from 48 households in Barangay Peñaplata were evacuated on Tuesday night, October 7, 2025, after strong wave surges and a sudden rise in sea levels inundated coastal areas due to the effects of the southwest monsoon (Habagat).

Authorities reported that 28 houses were totally damaged, forcing families—mostly from Purok 5A—to seek refuge at the barangay evacuation center. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties have been reported.

The City Government of Island Garden City of Samal, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), is now extending full assistance to evacuees, who are receiving hot meals, relief goods, medical aid, and temporary shelter. Profiling and interviews are ongoing to ensure all displaced families are properly documented and supported.

Medical teams from the City Health Office are conducting health assessments and check-ups for affected individuals, while free medicines are also being distributed at the evacuation center. The City Engineer’s Office and the City Public Order and Safety Office are set to conduct a damage assessment to determine the extent of the destruction and formulate recovery measures.

In response to the situation, City Mayor Lemuel T. Reyes has directed all concerned offices to prioritize the welfare of affected residents and to ensure the continuous distribution of food and essential aid.

Emergency teams remain on high alert, closely monitoring coastal conditions and coordinating relief operations as the Habagat continues to affect parts of the region.
