Davao City — In a landmark week for inclusive governance, the City Government of Davao rolled out two major initiatives that highlight its commitment to uplifting the lives of senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs). From providing meaningful employment to establishing a dedicated care center, Davao City is setting a standard that other local government units (LGUs) across the country are urged to follow.

On September 23–24, the Public Employment and Services Office (PESO) facilitated a special job fair exclusively for seniors and PWDs, resulting in the on-the-spot hiring of 302 individuals. The initiative, done in partnership with major fast-food chains, underscored how collaboration between the private sector and government can create genuine opportunities for vulnerable sectors.

PESO Manager Lilibeth Pantinople shared that on the first day alone, McDonald’s hired 80 seniors, with two shifts arranged across 19 participating stores. To ensure safety and readiness, applicants must first complete medical requirements such as X-rays and health certificates.

The following day, the Jollibee Group opened its doors to 162 senior citizens and 60 PWDs, including those who are deaf and hard of hearing. Seniors will work in four-hour shifts, while PWDs will have eight-hour workdays, with all deployments spread in batches to maximize inclusivity and sustainability.

“This proves that seniors and PWDs are not just beneficiaries of social programs but are capable contributors to the workforce,” Pantinople emphasized.

Complementing the employment program, Davao City also inaugurated the first-ever Senior Citizen Community Care Center on September 22 in Dumoy, Davao City. The center aims to provide health care and wellness programs, livelihood training, and access to government services tailored for the elderly.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, joined by the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA), the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

NCSC Regional Director Cesar Adegue IV hailed the center as a pioneering project in Region XI, proving that strong collaboration between the community and local government can result in sustainable, life-changing initiatives.

Acting Mayor Duterte underscored the vital role of senior citizens in shaping families and communities, describing them as guides whose wisdom should remain central in community life. “You are the foundation of our communities. By actively participating in government programs, you help set the path for the next generation,” he said.

With these twin milestones—the massive job placement of seniors and PWDs, and the opening of the Senior Citizen Community Care Center—Davao City has positioned itself as a model of inclusivity, compassion, and proactive governance.

Other LGUs are now challenged to replicate these programs, proving that with strong partnerships and political will, it is possible to build communities where no one is left behind.
