Maluso, Basilan – May 11, 2025 — Authorities confiscated a high-powered firearm and several rounds of ammunition during a joint law enforcement operation in Barangay Tamuk, Maluso, Basilan on May 10, 2025.
The operation was carried out by the Regional Intelligence and Assessment Team (RIAT), Cotabato Task Unit (CTU), and the Regional Investigation Division (RID) of the Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO BAR), with support from other law enforcement units. The mission involved serving a search warrant for violation of Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
Recovered from the suspect were the following items:
- One ELISCO automatic rifle (Serial No. RP260640)
- 137 live rounds of 5.56 caliber ammunition
- 10 live rounds of .45 caliber ammunition
- Two long magazines and four short magazines for 5.56 caliber rifles
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was apprised of his constitutional rights and is currently detained at the Maluso Municipal Police Station pending proper legal disposition.
PBGEN Romeo J. Macapaz, Regional Director of PRO BAR, emphasized the importance of the operation in addressing the presence of illegal firearms in the region.
“This operation is a clear manifestation of our unwavering commitment to enforce Republic Act No. 10591 and to curb the proliferation of loose firearms in the region. We will remain steadfast in our efforts to ensure the safety and security of our communities,” Macapaz stated.
He added that the operation aligns with the directive of PNP Chief PGEN Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, who has called for intensified efforts to crack down on illegal firearms nationwide, particularly in light of the upcoming elections.
The Philippine National Police reaffirmed its resolve to eliminate threats to public safety and maintain peace and order across the country.
