MAITUM, SARANGANI PROVINCE – A coordinated police operation led to the successful rescue of three students trapped in the middle of the Pangi River in Barangay Pangi, Maitum, Sarangani Province, on May 12, 2025, at around 4:30 p.m.
The rescue was carried out by a composite team from the Sarangani Police Provincial Office, Police Regional Office 12, and the GENSAN Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA). The students, all residents of Barangay Pangi and aged between 21 and 22, were stranded when the river’s water level suddenly rose, sweeping them into the strong currents.

Vanzuela of the Sarangani Police Provincial Office, with support from PCMS Candido A. Palero of PRO 12, and PCMS Jose Albert L. Diño, Pat Lloyd Lester E. Soabillo, and Pat Rey Mark S. Petargue of GENSAN MARPSTA, who were stationed at a nearby election security checkpoint for the 2025 National and Local Elections.
Despite the dangerous conditions, the officers successfully brought the three to safety and provided immediate assistance and debriefing. After ensuring they were unharmed, the students were safely sent home.
