GLAN, Sarangani (May 1, 2025) — A one-meter Bowmouth Guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma), an endangered marine species, was rescued and safely released back into the waters of Sarangani Bay after being accidentally caught by a local fisherman in Barangay Pangyan on April 30.

The incident was promptly reported by fisherfolk Sali Diabal to the Protected Area Management Office of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (PAMO-SBPS), ensuring the fish was handled with care and returned to its natural habitat. Responding quickly, PAMO-SBPS personnel assessed the condition of the Bowmouth Guitarfish before facilitating its successful release back into the sea.

This act of cooperation between local fishers and environmental authorities highlights the increasing awareness and active participation of coastal communities in marine conservation efforts.

Bowmouth Guitarfish are bottom-dwelling creatures typically found in shallow waters near coral reefs and mangroves. Due to threats such as habitat destruction, pollution, and accidental capture or bycatch, the species is classified as “Endangered” under the Philippines’ Fisheries Administrative Order No. 208 and “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

With a slow reproductive rate, the Bowmouth Guitarfish is particularly vulnerable to population decline, making every successful rescue vital for its conservation.

PAMO-SBPS continues to call on local communities and stakeholders to remain vigilant and supportive of marine wildlife protection in the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape.
