Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur Vice Mayor Mohammad Omar Abpi Samama was injured in a gun attack while delivering a speech at an evacuation center in Barangay Magaslong on Monday, February 24, 2025. The incident occurred during the 4th SHINE (Serbisyong Handog ng Inyong Nagmamalasakit at Epektibong Lokal na Pamahalaan ng Datu Piang) Convergence event at the COVID Center.
According to local police, an unidentified assailant shot Samama in the abdomen while he was addressing the gathering. Emergency responders immediately transported the wounded official to Cotabato Regional Medical Center in Cotabato City, where he is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be recovering.
Authorities have launched a hot pursuit operation to identify and apprehend the suspect. Law enforcement officials urge the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work, emphasizing the importance of due process in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
Local Government and Military Statements
The local government of Datu Piang released a statement expressing gratitude that Vice Mayor Samama is on the path to recovery. “We are thankful to report that, by the grace of Allah, Vice Mayor Samama is currently recovering. His family, colleagues, and the entire community of Datu Piang continue to offer their support, and we remain hopeful for his full recovery,” the statement read.
The local government also called for unity and vigilance, urging residents to support law enforcement efforts while upholding peace and mutual respect. “As we navigate this difficult time, we emphasize the importance of unity within the community. The 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division of the Philippine Army strongly condemned the attack, labeling it a “senseless and cowardly act of violence.” Division Commander Brig. Gen. Donald M. Gumiran assured the public that the military, in coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP), is actively investigating the incident and working to bring the perpetrators to justice. “We extend our prayers for the speedy recovery of Vice Mayor Samama and assure the people of Datu Piang that we stand firm in our commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining peace and order in the community.”
Similarly, the 6th Infantry (Redskin) Battalion, under the command of Lt. Col. Al Victor Burkley, denounced the attack and confirmed that security forces are on high alert to prevent further incidents. The battalion also urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation that could hinder the ongoing investigation.
Provincial and Regional Responses
The Provincial Government of Maguindanao del Sur also condemned the shooting, describing it as “a direct threat to the peace we are striving to uphold.” In its official statement, the provincial government called on authorities to swiftly act in bringing those responsible to justice. “This act of violence instills fear in our communities and violates the fundamental human rights of every Bangsamoro. We stand united in fighting against violence and promoting peace in our province.”
The Ministry of the Interior and Local Government (MILG) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) echoed these sentiments, stating that such acts of violence have no place in a society that aims for justice and good governance. Minister Atty. Sha Elijah B. Dumama-Alba reaffirmed BARMM’s commitment to upholding security and the rule of law. “The MILG stands in solidarity with Vice Mayor Samama, his family, and the people of Datu Piang. We call on law enforcement agencies to swiftly investigate this incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
