In a bid to promote environmental sustainability and boost agricultural productivity, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist hosted a Plant Tree-Growing Activity on January 14, 2025, at the Provincial Nursery in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte. This initiative marks the first of many activities planned for the calendar year 2025, underscoring the province’s commitment to greening efforts and economic empowerment.
The activity, spearheaded by Provincial Agriculturist Shiela T. Abdulgani, saw the active participation of Supervising Agricultural Officers Morcy A. Kanakan, Rasul K. Mamogkat, and Nasrudin B. Bantas, alongside a dedicated team from various divisions. These included representatives from the Farm Management, Farm Home Resource Management, Rural Youth, Administrative, and Nursery Divisions. Their collaborative effort exemplifies the unified vision for a more sustainable and prosperous Maguindanao del Norte.
The focus of the activity was on planting high-value fruit-bearing trees, chosen for their potential to yield economic and nutritional benefits in the near future. A total of 780 seedlings of calamansi, durian, and jackfruit were successfully planted during the event. These crops were carefully selected for their ability to thrive in the local climate and their potential to provide additional income to smallholder farmers while contributing to the province’s overall agricultural output.
“This activity is not just about planting trees; it’s about planting opportunities for growth,” said Abdulgani. “These trees symbolize hope for a better tomorrow, where our farmers can benefit from sustainable practices and improved livelihoods.”
The initiative also highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing environmental and economic challenges. By integrating the efforts of multiple divisions, the event demonstrated a model for successful interdepartmental collaboration, aiming to inspire similar activities across the province.
In addition to its economic benefits, the tree-growing activity contributes to environmental conservation by enhancing green cover, mitigating the effects of climate change, and supporting biodiversity in the region. Such initiatives resonate with global calls for sustainable practices and community-driven development.
The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist plans to conduct follow-up activities throughout the year to ensure the care and monitoring of the planted trees. Regular updates and support will be provided to local farmers to maximize the trees’ growth and eventual yields.
This tree-growing event is a promising start to what looks to be a fruitful year for Maguindanao del Norte. It is not just a step toward agricultural advancement but also a testament to the power of unity and foresight in creating a sustainable future.
