Cotabato City, Philippines – A member of the Philippine National Police (PNP) was shot dead Sunday evening, December 1, at the parking lot of Citi Mall in Barangay Rosary Heights 7, Cotabato City.
The victim, identified as Police Master Sergeant (PMSg) John Manuel Bongcawil, was assigned to the Provincial Intelligence Unit (PIU) of the Maguindanao Norte Police Provincial Office. A resident of Parang, Maguindanao del Norte, Bongcawil was reportedly on his way home with his family in their gray Mitsubishi Mirage (plate number LAB9820) when the assailants struck.
According to initial police reports, two gunmen opened fire at Bongcawil’s vehicle. In an attempt to protect his family, the officer fled from the car, but another assailant was waiting nearby and delivered the fatal shots. Bongcawil was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival by attending doctors.
Investigators recovered 12 empty shells and four unfired bullets at the crime scene, believed to be from a .45-caliber pistol.
Authorities suspect the attack may be related to Bongcawil’s work as an intelligence officer, although the motive is still under investigation.
The incident was reported to Police Station 2 of the Cotabato City Police Office by a concerned citizen. A team led by PCpt. Teofisto R. Ferrer Jr., Officer-in-Charge, responded immediately and conducted an on-site investigation.
The PNP has assured the public of a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
