Davao Oriental Strengthens Peace and Security Initiatives in 4th Quarter PPOC Meeting

Davao Oriental, November 22, 2024 – The 4th Quarter Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) Meeting successfully convened today at the Capitol Grand Conference Room, led by PPOC Chairperson and Governor Niño Uy. The meeting focused on ensuring the province’s continued insurgency-free status—a significant milestone for peace and development in Davao Oriental.

Key strategies discussed included empowering peace and development stakeholders, strengthening people’s organizations, and intensifying efforts against criminal activities to ensure public safety. Governor Uy emphasized the importance of safeguarding youth education by preventing the reentry of illegal schools such as Salugpungan, which were previously linked to indoctrinating children with subversive ideologies. He also vowed to bolster border security to deter activities that could disrupt the province’s peace and progress.

Strengthening Law Enforcement and Environmental Protection

The council also proposed reinforcing law enforcement against illegal mining and sand-and-gravel extraction, which pose threats to the environment and public welfare. Information dissemination and peace-building efforts were highlighted as essential tools in fostering harmony and progress within communities.

Advancing the “Happy Home” and Assistance to Former Rebels

The meeting celebrated the continued success of the “Happy Home,” a reintegration facility for former rebels, which remains a benchmark for other provinces due to its effectiveness. The latest batch of former rebels received PHP 65,000 each in immediate and livelihood assistance, marking the conclusion of their integration process. Additionally, firearms remuneration amounting to PHP 2.9 million for 11 former rebels is currently being processed.

Recognizing Leadership and Commitment to Peace

Governor Uy expressed gratitude to the uniformed personnel for their unwavering dedication to peacekeeping. A PPOC resolution honored former 701st Brigade Commander Brigadier General Oliver Maquiling for his leadership, which greatly contributed to the province’s insurgency-free status. The council also warmly welcomed the new 701st Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Allan Jose Lorenzo Taguba, who committed to continuing the mission for peace and security.

A Vision for a Peaceful and Safe Province

In his closing remarks, Governor Uy underscored the ultimate goal of the province’s initiatives: “Our collective efforts aim to create a safe and peaceful province for the people of Davao Oriental.”

The PPOC remains steadfast in its commitment to sustaining the trust of residents by ensuring peace and security, paving the way for a brighter future for Davao Oriental.
