Davao City Launches Car-Free Sundays on Coastal Road to Promote Active Lifestyles

Starting December 1, 2024, Davao City is introducing Car-Free Sundays on the Davao City Coastal Road, an initiative designed to foster an active, healthy lifestyle while providing residents with a safe and scenic space for leisure activities. The program will transform the road into a vibrant haven for outdoor fitness enthusiasts every Sunday from 4:00 AM to 8:00 AM, reinforcing the city government’s commitment to sustainability, well-being, and community engagement.

What to Expect

The Davao City Coastal Road, a 3.2-kilometer stretch of picturesque coastal scenery, will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic every Sunday morning. This initiative prioritizes activities like running, walking, jogging, and cycling, encouraging Davaoeños to embrace fitness in a unique, car-free environment.

To ensure safety and enjoyment for all, specific guidelines and designated areas have been established:

  • Northbound Lane (Sea Side): Reserved exclusively for runners, walkers, and joggers.
  • Southbound Lane (Mountain Side): Dedicated to cycling activities.
  • Parks 1 and 2 (Bago Aplaya Esplanade, Gulf View Esplanade): Open for leisure and fitness activities approved by the Davao City Parks System Management Board (DCPSMB).

Guidelines for Participants

Participants must adhere to the following rules to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:

For Runners, Walkers, and Joggers

  1. Stay in the designated northbound lane.
  2. Avoid organized events and large group runs.
  3. Maintain continuous forward motion to prevent obstructions.
  4. Wear appropriate attire and carry essentials like ID and hydration bottles.

For Cyclists

  1. Use the southbound lane exclusively for cycling.
  2. Adhere to a maximum speed limit of 20 kph.
  3. Wear helmets and safety gear, including blinkers.
  4. Avoid racing or peloton-style riding.
  5. Only bicycles and E-bikes with operable pedals are permitted.

Prohibited Activities and Items

To maintain safety, cleanliness, and orderliness, the following are not allowed:

  • Skateboards, roller blades/skates, and electric scooters
  • Pets along the road
  • Ambulant vendors and unauthorized drone operations
  • Devices causing light or noise pollution, such as speakers and laser lights

Safety and Security Measures

The City Government has implemented comprehensive measures to ensure participants’ safety:

  • Security personnel from the Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO), Davao City Police Office (DCPO), and Task Force Davao will patrol the area.
  • Emergency medical teams will be on standby for immediate response.
  • Thorough bag inspections and proper waste disposal will be strictly enforced.

In Case of Extreme Weather

Car-Free Sundays will be canceled during extreme weather conditions to prioritize the safety of participants. Updates will be provided by the city government as needed.

Why It Matters

Mayor Sebastian Duterte emphasized that Car-Free Sundays are more than just a health and fitness initiative. They symbolize a collective effort to make Davao City greener and more sustainable. By reducing vehicle emissions and promoting active transport, the program aligns with the city’s long-term goals of environmental preservation and community wellness.
